ARTIST STATEMENT

The underlying theme in this current body of work is the traditional herringbone pattern. It is a simple pattern, basic in its construction and yet complex in its nuances: depending on light and perspective, a herringbone weave can seem both unified and shifting at the same time. The textile motif provides the foundations for the overlying message of my work: complex stability and balance in the unity of disparate parts. The herringbone pattern is used as a jumping off point in the creation of these collages; their purpose being to render a simple motif dynamic through its deconstruction. In continuation with the textile theme, the materials featured in my collages are most often raw linen, canvas, and cut up parts of past paintings. Through a variety of textures which play off one another, each collage becomes a structured relief.

The pieces I create are dynamic, direct and engaging. These collages are dynamic through a decomposition of the traditional herringbone pattern and its reconstruction into something unexpected. They are direct in their presentation: simple shapes paired with a complex colour palette give the works structural stability, permanence and strength. The unifying element in my current body of work is the carefully chosen details which push each composition to extend beyond the original deconstruction. This reaching away from a simple theme is communicated through various woven textiles and select incorporated materials such as sandpaper.
